Inktober is a global social media event where artists create ink drawings every day in October. For the two years that I’ve participated in the event, I’ve chosen the theme of TV Characters. In 2019, I opened up my character choices to backers of my Patreon page, allowing each backer to choose a character for me to draw.
Inspired by the fun I’ve had with Inktober, in the spring of 2019, I counted down to the final season of Game of Thrones by posting a new character drawing every day, using the hashtag #CountdownToThrones.
I took another swing at the daily drawing challenge in October 2022, using the hashtags #inktober, #drawtober, #drawlloween, and #spooktober. I drew a batch of characters from “spooky” movies: horror, murder mystery, and comedic takes on horrors/mysteries.
In all of these instances, I’ve “pencilled” digitally and printed the line art in non-photo blue on 6×9 2-ply Bristol board, inking with my trusty #2 Windsor-Newton Series 7 brush and an occasional Zebra brush pen (mostly for ruled edges).
Working from photographs for these pieces allows this to be a fun technical exercise for me. Instead of sweating composition, narrative flow, and storytelling, it’s just me and my tools making pictures, and playing around with techniques in a way that I wouldn’t on work to be published. Having switched to a digital workflow back in 2013, this is a great way for me to keep my traditional (analog) skills sharp and have fun doing it.
